Benefits of more fun in your life

Why you need to have more fun in your life … every day

Do you need to learn how to become happy and have more fun? In todays, fast and frantic society most of us are weighed down by adult responsibilities. That means we can sometimes lose track of the important things in life. In fact, many people can’t even remember when they last had any spare time. Let alone actually scheduling some ‘me’ time.

No fun = mental and physical stress

If you are working too hard without taking time out to relax and unwind, you are in danger of missing out on the fun side of life. You are certainly not living it to its full potential. Can you even remember when the last time you really enjoyed a laugh?  Yet, it doesn’t need to be this way. You can break negative behaviour patterns and learn how to add more fun into your life.

“Never underestimate the importance of having fun.” Randy Pausch

What do we mean by having fun?

As discussed in a previous blog, “Do you want more Joy in your daily life?”, pleasure is a mental and emotional state experienced by humans when we do something positive, fun or worthwhile. It doesn’t need to take much time; you can make a difference by just taking 5 minutes to enjoy a joke or play with a pet.

It can be as simple as thinking of something that makes you smile and making time in your routine to do this activity or something else you enjoy. Start small and build up, the important thing is that you will be learning how to make life more fun every day.

“Do anything, but let it produce joy.” – Walt Whitman.

Good for your mind and body

How can positive psychology make you happier? The answer is that it can make you both happier and healthier. According to psychologists, when we experience positivity, it opens our mind to new possibilities. This allows us to be more creative and see new opportunities.

When life is more fun and full of positivity, it also transforms us psychologically, balances stress levels, creates feel-good hormones, and encourages cell renewal.

“Even though you are growing up, you should never stop having fun.” – Nina Dobrev.

10 benefits of having more fun in life

Why you need to have fun in your life... every day

Allowing yourself time to have fun without feeling guilty is crucial to your wellbeing. In fact, creating more fun and joy will positively affect every corner of your life.

1. Happy hormones for less stress

Feeling stressed is extremely dangerous for your mind and body. When cortisol (stress hormone) is increased, it can result in high-blood pressure, heart disease and strokes. Whereas, if you are having fun, your body releases endorphins that make us feel great and reduce stress.

2. Feel full of energy

Feeling sad and depressed drains mental and physical energy. So, if you can reduce negativity and have more fun, you will have much more energy.

3. Boost your creativity

Have you noticed that you never come up with the most creative ideas when you are under pressure, stressed or tired? If you can allow yourself to let go, relax and have fun, you’ll give your imagination the opportunity to kick into gear and come up with some great ideas.

4. Greater productivity

If you are allowing yourself a break without feeling guilty, be it 5, 15 or 50 minutes to do something fun, be it a walk, yoga, or a chat with a friend, you’ll be in a much more relaxed and productive state of mind. Taking regular breaks from tasks you don’t like allows the mind to recharge and work more efficiently – it’s a fact!

5. Feel younger

Have you ever heard the old adage, ‘You are as old as you feel?’ Well, it is true! If you can shrug off your adult responsibilities and have fun, you will feel more alive and youthful.

6. Better social skills

If you let yourself have fun, be silly, and let your guard down, it can help you lose your inhibitions and start to relax more and reduce social anxiety. Playful activities and fun can help you bond with your colleagues and friends, which can improve communication and social skills.

7. Improved memory

It makes sense that if you are relaxed and free of stress, your mind will be much sharper and your memory will be better. By making time to have fun, we live in the present and concentrate the mind on the job at hand.

8. Sleep better

If you have more sleep, you will reduce stress, which means you won’t go to bed with your mind busy and fretful.  When you are having fun, the body releases lovely feel-good hormones like serotonin instead of cortisol (a bad hormone released when you are stressed), which helps improve the quality of your sleep.

9. Emotional healing

Instead of dwelling on old hurt and unhappy events, having fun can help you move forward with more positive memories and become happier. Once you move forward and start having fun again, you can gain greater perspective, rediscover what is important to you and start living your best life again.

10. Better love life

Having fun, sharing jokes, and playing around with your partner can lift your mood and create greater intimacy. In other words, take your relationship seriously, but not so much yourself!
